Bakteri Shigella dysenteriae merupakan penyebab disentri yang bakteri negatif Gram dengan bentuk batang pendek atau basil tunggal. ini bersifat anaerob fakultatif dan memfermentasi glukosa serta tidak laktosa. Masalah pencernaan karena infeksi masih tinggi di Indonesia menyebabkan tingginya intensitas penggunaan antibiotik memicu berbagai permasalahan terutama resistensi. Termasuk telah menunjukan resistensi terhadap beberapa diantaranya yaitu ampicilin, tetracycline, cefixime ciprofloxacin. Dengan demikian, maka diperlukan pengobatan alternatif tehadap penyakit disentri, salah satunya daun kuru-kuru (Ocimum tenuiflorum L.) memiliki kandungan terpenoid, alkaloid, flavonoid, senyawa aktif lain dapat mengobati disentri.
